Short for Radio Frequency Identification is a generic term that is used to describe a system that transmits the identity (in the form of a unique serial number) of an object or person wirelessly, using radio waves. It’s grouped under the broad category of automatic identification technologies. The purpose of an RFID system is to enable data to be transmitted by a portable device, called a tag, which is read by an RFID reader and processed according to the needs of a particular application. The data transmitted by the tag may provide identification or location information, or specifics about the product tagged, such as price, color, date of purchase, etc. RFID technology has been used by thousands of companies for a decade or more. . RFID quickly gained attention because of its ability to track moving objects.

Some of its application using RFID are Metro Train Ticket System, Railway Platform to Display Position of Coach, Animal Identification Device for Dairy Farms, and Parts Tracking System for Manufacturers etc.

The project is intended as solution to the traditional way of managing books in a college/university library which consumes lot of time & effort. The project describes a library management system that reduces time consumption enhancing the accuracy of library records by recording the necessary information about the books instantly & accurately, and preventing further discrepancies in advance. RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) basically consists of a RFID card and a RFID reader. For this purpose all the library books are fitted with RFID cards which contains the necessary information related to the book. When a book is shown in front of the RFID reader the information about it is added to the library database keeping a record of the library books and is indicated by a buzzer. This facilitates the library system even faster, increasing the efficiency and reducing the time.

The proposed project is intended to design and implement an automatic tracking system to track a local vehicle using RFID technology. RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is a means of identifying an item based on radio frequency transmission. This technology can be used to identify, track and detect a wide variety of objects. Communication takes place between a reader and a transponder (derived from TRANSmitter/resPONDER – Silicon Chip connected to an antenna), usually called "tag". In this project, each local vehicle of an area is provided with a tag which holds the information i.e., unique ID serial number of the vehicle. When these local vehicles holding the tags pass through the field generated by a reader, they transmit this information back to the reader, thus allowing identification & tracking of the required local vehicle. When the target vehicle is tracked it is indicated through a buzzer.

The proposed project is intended as a solution to the traditional way of toll gate reduction system by designing and implementing an automatic toll gate using RFID technology. In this project, vehicles or the owners are provided with a tag which holds the necessary information of vehicle and bank account deposit of driver. Tag can be installed on the first front number plate of vehicle. When these vehicles holding the tags pass through the field generated by a reader in this case the toll gate, they transmit this information back to the reader. The amount is then automatically deducted from the bank account of the specific card holder. The deduction process is indicated by a buzzer.

The proposed project is intended as a solution to replace the voting through traditional paper ballot with electronic voting machine which is more efficient & reduces the lengthy vote counting process. In the project, each voter holds an individual RFID identification card which includes the necessary details about the voter. To cast their votes, the voters uses a keypad to write their choice and then vote by showing the card in front of the RFID reader thereby enrolling their valuable vote for the selected candidate. The voting machine keeps the record of the number of voters & counting it simultaneously for the individual candidate. It provides the advantage of system reset and continuously displays the status through LEDs.

The proposed project is intended to automate a canteen using RFID technology. In case of an automated canteen, the RFID tags are distributed to the working personals of the canteen & the owner of the canteen. The owner has an access to control each and every appliance in the canteen. But the other tags are confined to only certain areas. The system consists of a RFID reader that reads the RFID cards/tags and controls the On/Off operation of the appliances accordingly. The tags holds a specific pre-defined number, which when read operates the requisite appliance as programmed before. When a tag is shown in front of the reader, the reader reads the data and feds it to the microcontroller. The microcontroller processes & extracts the information attached with the card and utilizes it as an output signal to control the On/Off operation of the canteen appliances through Relay/Triac driver. The Buzzer connected to the system beeps once if the card is authenticated otherwise beeps more than once. The project also provides the advantage of system reset.
